From the passport to courage:
what changes when you
cross borders for the first time

The real journey begins long before boarding — and transforms far more than you can imagine!

By Fernanda Sodré

There is a silent moment every first-time traveler experiences. It is not when the plane takes off. It is not when you first set foot on foreign soil. It is well before that. It is when you hold the passport in your hands and realize: "This is really going to happen".

In that instant, something shifts. Not in the world out there, but inside you. Because crossing borders for the first time is not just about geography — it is about breaking down the invisible barriers that live inside us.

The borders that do not appear on the map

"I do not speak English well enough." "I do not know how to deal with red tape." "What if I cannot manage on my own?"

Do these phrases sound familiar? Well, these are the hardest borders to cross — the ones we build inside our own heads. They are not made of visas or customs. They are made of fear, insecurity and that old habit of underestimating our own capacity to adapt.

The uncomfortable truth is that these mental barriers protect us — but they also imprison us. They keep us safe in the comfort zone, but they also keep us from discovering who we really are when the familiar script no longer exists.

Melissa Santos has been working in tourism since she was 18 and is currently a co-owner of Trip In Viagens Alphaville. She watches this phenomenon every day:

"Most people who have never traveled abroad do not lack financial resources — they have a permission problem in their own minds. They simply do not allow themselves to believe they are capable of facing the new."

Planning is an act of courage

Few people realize it, but planning a trip is a form of therapy.

When you start organizing your first international trip, you go beyond researching flights and accommodation. You are actually negotiating with your fears. You are proving to yourself that what seemed impossible is entirely doable.

Choosing the destination is choosing the version of yourself you want to meet. Organizing documents and studying destination options is proving that you are able to deal with complexity. Each planning step is an exercise in self-awareness: "I can, I am able, I make it happen."

That is why I like to say that traveling is an exercise in self-confidence — especially in December, when we have that rare power to slow down time and open space to look beyond our to-do lists — and reconnect with what truly matters. Our truest self.

The journey is not in the destination

The transformation does not begin when you land in another country. It begins when you decide to go.

Every challenge solved during the planning is a courage muscle being strengthened.

You have not even left Brazil yet and you already feel different.

There is a side effect no one talks about: after the first international trip, you come back hooked, more self-confident — not about traveling, but about growing.

You discover that your limits were nothing but mental prisons.

Entrepreneurs who take their first international trip come back stronger. They start seeing business challenges with the same eyes as someone who managed on their own in an unfamiliar country: "I do not know everything, but I know I can figure it out."

An invitation to BNI members

For us, members of BNI Região Oeste, we have an incredible opportunity: the BNI Global Convention. After the success of the 2025 edition in Sydney, where thousands of entrepreneurs gathered to strengthen connections and expand horizons, the next convention promises to be even more transformative.

Imagine combining personal growth with international networking. Conversations that turn into partnerships, experiences that become ideas and business. You do not come back with photos alone — you come back with a new vision of yourself and of what is possible to achieve, beyond your geographical borders.

"At Trip In Viagens Alphaville, I have the privilege of accompanying many of these journeys.

People who set out in search of a destination and end up finding a more confident and curious version of themselves", shares Melissa Santos.

The first step is always the most symbolic

Stop and imagine: what if 2026 were the year you stopped waiting for the perfect moment?

What if the first step were not boarding the plane, but simply allowing yourself?

Get your passport if you do not have one yet. Look up that destination that has always fascinated you. Talk to someone who has been through this experience.

Trip In Viagens Alphaville exists exactly for that — not only to sell trips, but to walk alongside those who have decided to take this step for the first time. And traveling, deep down, is always an inner journey that happens to be taking place somewhere else geographically. Every person has a different pace, a different fear, a different dream.

"And helping someone cross these invisible borders is, for me, the true meaning of traveling.", says Melissa Santos

What really comes back with you

In the end, you do not return to your starting point with souvenirs and photos alone. You come back with certainties and new experiences.

The certainty that you are more capable than you imagined.

That the world is more welcoming than your fears made it seem.

And that problems have a solution — even when you do not speak the local language.

And you come back with a question that changes everything: "If I was able to face the unknown, what else am I capable of doing?"

It is this question that transforms not only trips, but businesses, relationships and destinies.

In the end, crossing borders was never about getting your passport stamped —

it is about discovering that the biggest border and limitation is always inside us.

And the first step is to cross that border in order to live a life with much more courage, purpose and movement. Just start!
